At the annunciation of the coming of Jesus to the Virgin Mary, the angel Gabriel gave us the “Ave Maria,” or “Hail Mary.”
“Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death Amen.”
Addressing the Maid as the “Mother of God,” all but deifies her. Certainly it foreshadows her status as “Queen of Heaven.”
This painting depicts the Virgin praying for mankind in her role as Heavenly Queen.
